HSBC Classics Opera Extravaganza 2011 (6th – 10th Jul)

Opera Extravaganza 2011

Following the sold out HSBC Classics Chopin dan lain-lain festival in 2010 , HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad and The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) will be celebrating the classics this year with its seventh season by presenting the HSBC Classics Opera Extravaganza 2011 from 6 – 10 July at klpac.

This annual music festival was initiated by the HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad and klpac back in 2005. It is one of the few music festivals in Malaysia and through the years it has showcased a whole host of talented Malaysian artistes such as Dennis Lee, Ng Chong Lim, Foo Mei Yi, Wong Shuenda, David Gomez and Michael Veerapen. It is a testament that Malaysia has a talented base of musicians and a thriving appreciation towards classical music.

This year, the festival highlight the dramatics of Opera. The HSBC Classics Opera Extravaganza 2011 promises to be a stunning festival. Opera performances are rare in Malaysia but there is a great appreciation for the libretto. After the positive feedback from the inclusion of a vocal segment in the HSBC Classics Chopin dan lain lain in 2010, the team has decided to dedicate this year’s festival to the most extraordinary instrument of all – the human voice.

Chamber Ensemble Workshop

Date & Time: 9 July @ 10am
Venue: Pentas 2, klpac
Conducted by:
Oh Yann Shie

The joy of music making comes greater with interaction. Playing in a small chamber group not only intenses the innate ability to listen to others but also enhances the pleasure of creating something beautiful; focusing on developing musicianship which “goes beyond notes” which includes listening, rhythmic, analytical and diplomatic skills.

Yann Shie Oh and Angela Lou will team up to coach and share their experiences with young people from two different instrumentalists’ point of view. Interested applicants are required to send in a short audio/video recording (approximately 7-10mins) of any work or the work they intended to perform during the workshop together with the application form for pre-selection. A maximum of 5 teams will be selected for this workshop. The combination of the ensemble is open for any duos, trios, quartets etc. with the presence of a piano, e.g. Piano duos (1 piano 4hands). Non-performing participants are also welcomed.

Submission deadline: 25 Jun (Sat)

Cello Masterclass

Date & Time: 9 July @ 2pm
Venue: Pentas 2, klpac
Conducted by: Aamil Sulaiman

Masterclass Subject: Sound Production

Just as wind players blow, the bow, is how string players produce sound. The control and exactness needed to produce a desired sound, in a particular way, to further emphasize the music, is a skill that needs to be second nature as the musician performs their piece. My masterclass will focus on the three basic principals of sound production that can be used across the board for the String Family. This will certainly change the practice approach of those who suffer from constantly looking to solve their pedagogy problems with the left hand alone. The bow is the key to sustaining the magic that enchants our audience. Knowing how to control ones instrument, will fill the soundscapes of the listeners mind and let them see through music. Any grade or level cellist are welcomed.

Requirements for Participation:

Cello’s Perferably: Other ‘bowed’ strings only

Must have a ‘prepared’ solo piece. (Concerto or Sonata)

Copy of music to be performed (Please provide title & composer’s name)

Participants will need to bring their instrument and accompanist (e.g pianist)

* To register, please email your CV to klpacorchestra@gmail.com by 15 June (Wed)
