Slowly, solemly, Ryan Lum unfurls his arms and began to play Kreisler’s familiar, haunting melody. His eyes shuttered, his posture straight and confident, his stage presence undeniably mature beyond his years. His fingers dance, and his body sways ever so gently with the melody until he finishes the piece with a grand flourish. “Scary”, says MPO violinist Jae Sern, who was in the audience. And so it was, for a musician who was up well past his bed time. Ryan is 10 years old.
For the first time ever, Ryan Lum will be teaming up with another Malaysian prodigy, the multi-award winning Joshua Ng and an ensemble of talented musicians in “Romanze: In Support of Life after Stroke”, a classical benefit concert for the National Stroke Association of Malaysia (NASAM) at Pentas 1, KL Performing Arts Center, on November 29th 2011 at 8pm.
Romanze, also featuring performances by talented musicians Joyce Ho, Chong Peck Wei, Vale Wong, Ariel Cheong and Christine Tan, is a collaboration between Pianissimo School of Music and NASAM. The programme will feature an eclectic mix of works by classical greats Schubert, Brahms, Debussy, Rachmaninov, Kreisler and rare piano duet performances of Piazzola’s Libertango and Lutoslawski’s Paganini Variations.
This will be Ryan and Joshua’s first public concert together and the two boys are looking forward to their debut.
“I feel very excited about this performance as I feel that it is a much bigger and more important event than any other performances I have ever performed in,” says Ryan.
“I often wish I could help others. Being just a small boy, the best I can do is to use my musical skills to help them raise funds. Please think of the poor families who are affected by stroke and how they need our help,” he adds.
Their teacher, Joyce Ho, says “The boys are clearly relishing the chance to contribute to a worthy cause and they’re working doubly hard to prepare for the concert. I think it’ll be a fantastic show!”
