When a nasty neighbor tries to have her dog put down, Dorothy (Stephanie Van Driesen) runs away with her dog, Toto, to escape her mundane life on the farm with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry (Alizakri Alias). A cyclone soon appears and carries her off to the magical land of Oz, where her house crashes on top of the Wicked Witch of the East in the middle of Munchkinland. Wishing desperately to return home, she is sent to the Emerald City by Glinda, the Good Witch of the North (Suhaili Micheline). In this Emerald City, she is told, resides a great and powerful wizard who can help her. On the way, she meets a Scarecrow (Peter Ong) who needs a brain, a Tin Man (Radhi Khalid) who wants a heart, and a Cowardly Lion (Zalina Lee) who desperately needs courage. They all hope the Wizard of Oz (Mano Maniam) will be able to grant their wishes, before the Wicked Witch of the West (Tria Aziz) catches up to avenge the death of her sister and to snatch back the powerful ruby slippers from Dorothy’s feet. Can they escape her wicked clutches? The Wicked Witch of the West shrieks menacingly after them, “I’ll get you, my pretty! And your little dog, too!”

This amazing musical has given us all these iconic characters and the most popular song of all time, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, sung by the legendary Judy Garland in her youth. It has been restaged all over the world including a current production running in the West End of London produced Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber. It has also spawned the hit musical, “Wicked”, giving the tale of Oz a fresh perspective through the Witches’ eyes. For the first time in Malaysia, The Wizard of Oz will be staged to enthrall the young and young-at-heart with its timeless tale of friendship, and how there is no place like home.

Developed from the legendary MGM screenplay this production, completely reconceived for the stage, contains all the much loved songs from the Oscar winning movie score, all the favourite characters and iconic moments, plus a few surprises along the way.

Featuring a lineup of Malaysia’s best stage and musical theatre talents including Stephanie Van Driesen, Peter Ong, Radhi Khalid, Zalina Lee, Tria Aziz, Mano Maniam, and Suhaili Micheline. Directed by Nell Ng and includes the creative dream team behind the success of ‘Cabaret’. This is one show you will not want to miss!

WHAT THE PRESS HAD TO SAY ABOUT PREVIOUS SELL-OUT SHOWS BY PAN PRODUCTIONS:

CABARET by Kander & Ebb

Such a powerful story needs powerful performers and PAN’s production of Cabaret has put together an absolute dream team. PAN Productions has done more than make this reviewer say: “Cabaret is one of the best things I’ve seen on stage.” Having seen what they can do, makes me say with absolute confidence that this is only “the best thing I’ve seen on stage … so far.”

THE STAR

Glitzy song and dance, comedy, drama and a raw edge make the musical Cabaret a winner. Director Nell Ng had certainly assembled a great team to bring Cabaret to life.

The deceptively simple, yet effective sets of (set designer and production manager) Melissa Teoh, coupled with good lighting to guide the audience’s attention, and seamless transitions between scenes made for a good watch.

THE NEW STRAITS TIMES

Cabaret is one of the more accomplished musical productions to be staged here, and the team at PAN Productions, particularly director Nell Ng, should be commended for their efforts. A true testament to what local theatre can be capable of.

THE SELANGOR TIMES

ALWAYS IN WONDERLAND? by Nell Ng

Nell Ng’s masterpiece ‘Always In Wonderland?’ is a celebration of 1980s music, real-life problems of fairytale characters and an unwitting tribute to a 1980s sitcom. With the addition of hilarious digs at Hollywood, a blast of 1980s pop staples, a smattering of Malaysian humour, costumes that pay homage to iconic film characters, and the cast’s spontaneous and commendable acting, audiences are enjoying a theatrical masterpiece of non-stop entertainment.

THE NEW STRAITS TIMES

Visually, the play is striking, with costumes matching their characters perfectly. The set and costumes were all splendidly done, and made completely from recycled materials, something the production team should be commended for. The true highlight of the musical, however, is its musical numbers, with its talented cast belting out the pop hits of the 1980s with great aplomb.
