“Filmmaker Norhayati Kaprawi was inspired to make “Mencari Kartika” after surveys by polling house Merdeka Center found a large majority of Muslims in Malaysia supported the caning of Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno for consuming alcohol. This documentary explores the Muslims’s perception of ‘justice’ in the context of Malaysia that is lauded for its modern, progressive, multi-racial image.
The Nut Graph’s Jacqueline Ann Surin says the film is important because “it reveals a truth about what made international headlines by letting us in on the private and the political in a way that media reports failed to.” In fact, Kartika herself has endorsed the film, saying that it offers viewers a larger truth about her actions and statements after she was sentenced.”
