2009 will mark a special milestone for the HSBC Classics as its fifth instalment is just round the corner!
This annual music festival, initiated by HSBC Bank Malaysia together with klpac, has come a long way since the very first Piano Festival in 2005. Over the years, it has brought back many Malaysian artists based overseas, showcase countless of other local artistes as well as international musicians.
The main aims of the HSBC Classics series have always been to nurture local talent and to develop the classical music scene in Malaysia. Therefore, it is apt that for this year's festival, the spotlight is shone on the rising talents of Malaysia, the generation of musicians that will sustain and help the music industry here grow.
FESTIVAL SCHEDULE
Brass Quintet Showcase: 14 July, 8pm in IndiCine (no charge)
This educational showcase will be performed by klpac orchestra wind players - Paul Baker, Moh Cheong Fong, Michael Smith, Tay Kai Yi & Bruce Lee
Solo Piano Recital: 15 July, 8.30pm in Pentas 2 (RM30 / RM15 concession)
The winner of the inaugural HSBC Classics Piano Competition 2008, Wong Shuenda will be performing in this much-anticipated solo recital as part of his prize
Chamber Concert: 16 July, 8.30pm in Pentas 2 (RM35 / RM20 concession)
The ever-popular Malaysian Piano Trio, comprising Loo Bang Hean on piano, Yap Ling on violin & Jonathan Oh on cello, is back again to perform this lively repertoire of chamber music.
Orchestral Concert: 17 & 18 July, 8.30pm in Pentas 1 (RM60 / 45 / 30 for adults and RM40 / 30 / 20 for concession)
Without a doubt, this exciting East-meets-West concert will be the highlight of this year's festival. It will be performed by four string soloists Wong Lu Ee, Liuyi Retallick, Gerald Ng & Lau Yew Hann, the klpac Orchestra and pianist Oh Yann Shie.
String Ensemble Workshop: 18 July, 3pm in IndiCine (no charge)
This string ensemble workshop will be conducted by accomplished violinist and choral / orchestra conductor Eprodito Bartolome and will focus on ensemble playing.
NEW! Viola Workshop: 18 July, 11am in IndiCine (no charge)
This workshop conducted by Andrew Filmer will cover a bit on the history of the instrument, new viola-making strategies, contrasts with the violin, tone & more. Andrew will also demosntrate how different techniques and theories can be used to form a unique interpretation.
