SYNOPSIS:

Back by popular demand! From the same team that brought you A Night of Cantonese Opera, The Actors Studio Teater Rakyat will be presenting another night of cultural extravaganza.

This time we bring you a different set of stories set against the same haunting tunes, elaborate costumes, distinct make up and the melodramatic stories that make up the world of Cantonese Opera.

Having been born into a family of Cantonese Opera performers, Kam Sin Yiew is not only a performer but also a teacher who believes that the art needs to be passed down to the generations to come. This Hong Kong native believes that Malaysia has the talent and the heart to keep Cantonese Opera alive.

PERFORMED IN CANTONESE WITH SCENE BY SCENE DESCRIPTIONS IN ENGLISH (PROJECTED)

Hong Ling Hao Po Mou Tou On Zhi Dui Fa Hai (Hong Ling's Incident of Headless Corpse)

Featuring Kam Sin Kiew (as Lou Kiew) and Lai Mei Yoke (as Jo Wei Ming, the judge)

There once lived a high-ranking official and his family in Suzhou. Sadly, he passed away, leaving behind a wife and sister named Lou Kiew and So Yoke Kwai. After the passing of her husband, Lou Kiew refused to remain out of the limelight so she went on to have an affair with Chun Sam Fong, a secretary with the government. Chun Sam Fong had a wife who looked very much like Lou Kiew but his wife was very sickly and had to stay in bed.

One day, Chun Sam Fong needed to leave to another state for work but he did not have the heart to leave Lou Kiew. He chose to murder his wife and threw her corpse next to a damaged bridge and buried her head under one of the trees at the Suzhou government office. Sam Fong dressed his wife in Lou Kiew’s clothes so that everyone would think that the corpse belonged to Lou Kiew and not his wife. However, when they put on the embroidery shoe for the dead, one of it dropped and another was taken by Lou Kiew. The judge quickly picked up the shoe that dropped and in order to solve the criminal case, he flirted with Lou Kiew. In the end, Chun Sam Fong and Lou Kiew received the death penalty.

Yin Kok Tong Wong Sum (Pleasant Song Touches The Emperor)

Featuring Ng Sooi Nyin (as Emperor Hon) & Cheong Yin Pin (as Wai Zhi Hing)

Emperor Hon was a romantic man but he was also very scared of his wife. One day, he visited his sister and passed a group by the lake. He was enchanted by a singer who was performing some wonderful numbers. After asking for an introduction, he found out that the beautiful singer was Wai Zhi Hing and she was actually a singer in the palace. In the end, she was made an imperial concubine.

Chiu Kuan Chut Choi (Chiu Kuan on the Frontier)

Featuring Kam Sin Kiew (as Chiu Kuan)

Wong Cheong moved into the palace when she was just thirteen. However, she only had the opportunity to meet the emperor when she was sixteen. Wong Cheong was actually very beautiful and she played the Pipa very skillfully. The King of Hong Lou, Fu Hon Che, invaded Zhong Yun and the army just could not defend their people against the powerful troops of Fu Hon Che. Therefore, they decided to send the beloved Wong Cheong as an offer of peace. As part of the sacrifice, Wong Cheong was required to change her name to Wong Chiu Kuan. When she reached the border of Hon and Wu, she sang a song named “Chiu Kuan Chut Choi” to express her feelings.

(There will also be a Traditional Ribbon Ball Dance by Kyonis Chong in this scene)
