Presented by The Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival & The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre
From its inception in 2014, Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival has grown to become one of the most important music festivals in Malaysia in terms of its impact on young musicians, primarily those who are still music students looking towards having a career in music. With a strong emphasis on imparting professional know-how to younger musicians, the clinics and performances have been inspirational not only to the younger set but also to the seasoned professionals themselves as they come together to learn from each other in what has become a strong and thriving sense community.
The 5th instalment will continue the effort of incorporating of new ideas and improvements that have come from criticisms and feedback. The all-time favourite clinics and forum will be remained:
- “Introduction to Harmony” by Toro Cheng
- “improvisation for Beginners” by Ch’ng Wee Lern
- “Advanced Jazz Voicings” by Justin Lim
- “Forum – Importance of Music Education towards a sustainable career”
New master classes from the professionals in the industry will be included:
- Drums clinics by KJ Wong and Zahid Ahmad
- Bass clinics by Fly and Daniel Foong
- Saxophone clinics by Julian Chan and Patrick Terbrack
- Guitar clinics by Wan Gigi and Rizal Tony
In the 5th instalment, “1st Malaysian Jazz Talent Competition” will be introduced on 20th January @ 4pm. It is now not only limited to jazz pianists but is opened to all non-vocal instrumentalists. 8 shortlisted participants consisting of students and early professionals will be showing off the talents they have under their sleeves.
“College Night” on 19th January @ 8pm featuring young and talented bands from different colleges and universities such as Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), International College of Music (ICOM) and UCSI University (UCSI). Selected awards will be given out to outstanding performers to acknowledge their effort and talent.
All-time favourite “Piano Duets and Trios Concert” on 20th January @ 8pm will be featuring the top pianists in Malaysia with their duet and trio combinations. The final grand “Gala Concert” will be held on 21st January @ 8pm where the who’s who in Malaysian Jazz music will be featured.
We hope to build a community in which jazz practitioners can exchange their knowledge to students and amateur musician, create more learning and employment opportunity so that the industry can be self-sustain.
