From its inception in 2014, the Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival has grown to become one of the most important music festivals in Malaysia in terms of its impact on young musicians, primarily music students looking towards having a career in music. With a strong emphasis on imparting professional know-how to the younger generation, the clinics and performances have been inspirational not only to the younger set but also to the seasoned professionals as they come together to learn from each other in what has become a strong and thriving community in the music industry.

In the 6th instalment, the “2nd Malaysian Jazz Talent Competition” will be introduced on the 19th of January @ 4pm. It is now not only limited to jazz pianists but is open to all non-vocal instrumentalists. 8 shortlisted participants consisting of students and early professionals will be showing off the talents they have under their sleeves.

The “College + High School Night” on the 18th of January @ 8pm will feature young and talented bands from different colleges and universities such as Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Akademi Seni Budaya Dan Warisan Kebangsaan (Aswara), International College of Music (ICOM), UCSI University (UCSI) and Mont Kiara High School. Selected awards will be given out to outstanding performers to acknowledge their efforts and talent.

All-time favourites “The Notables” on the 19th of January @ 8pm will be featuring notable young musicians working in the scene. This concert is specially curated for the event, to showcase these wonderful talents. This concert will also include the Penang Jazz Big Band and the Julian Chan Big Band. The final grand “Gala Concert” will be held on the 20th of January @ 8pm where the who’s who of the Malaysian Jazz music scene will be featured.

MJPF hopes to build a community in which jazz practitioners can share and exchange their knowledge to students and amateur musicians, creating more learning and employment opportunities which will enable the industry to be self-sustainable in the future.
