Almost three decades ago, two people joined hands to pursue a dream. Unbeknownst to them, this dream of theirs has turned out to be a phenomenal driving force in continuing to redefine the arts landscape in Malaysia, helping it grow into the bustling industry it is today.
The duo is none other than husband-and-wife team Dato’ Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham OAM, Founders of The Actors Studio.
One can draw a close parallel between the major milestones in the development of Malaysian performing arts and the work of The Actors Studio whether it is the establishment of the country’s first privately-owned theatre underneath Dataran Merdeka to the formation of Malaysia’s first fully-integrated arts centre, klpac, followed by penangpac up North.
Seven venues on, hundreds of award-winning productions later, The Actors Studio has had a hand in nurturing thousands of artistes including many who are regarded as the crème de la crème of the industry today such as Patrick Teoh, the late Ramli Hassan, Fauziah Nawi and Tiara Jacquelina. It has presented almost 600 productions and over a million people have passed through the doors of its theatres.
Leading up to its 30th anniversary in 2019, The Actors Studio will be mounting an ambitious celebration from 2018 onwards, offering a glimpse of what is to come with over 20 exciting productions that are a wonderful reflection of its rich legacy.
