American Choral Traditions by Joshua Habermann

This presentation offers a broad overview of choral composition in the United States, tracing the development from the colonial period and the simple melodies of the 19th century to contemporary works suitable for more advanced choirs and competition.

Popular new choral works will be introduced, with a particular focus on the current generation of American composers whose works are making an impact around the world. We will also explore performance practices of typically American genres such as African American spirituals, gospel music, and vocal jazz with the goal of making this music more accessible to choirs from outside the United States.
