What started as a labour of love to reconnect music educators and musicians after the pandemic has blossomed into a bigger movement involving a wider music community.

A project with a big heart and even bigger dreams, The klpac Symphonic Band’s outreach collaborative programme entitled An Uncommon Journey II returns with 48 talented musicians from Klang Valley, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Perak undergoing intensive training which will culminate in public concerts under the baton of Music Director Cheryl Mah and esteemed guest conductors – Joost Flach and Raja Muzafar Raja Abdullah. The concert will feature flute soloist Chew Sze Gee in conjunction with the Muramatsu flute’s 100th anniversary celebrations worldwide.

This truly international and varied programme takes music lovers through works by Dutch, Japanese, Austrian, Italian, American, Belgian and Italian composers as well as our very own pride and joy – arranger Wong Chee Yean with his lovely rendition of Rasa Sayang and composer Lim Yu-Yao’s Eternal Blossom Overture, making its world premiere at the concert.

An Uncommon Journey II is made possible thanks to CG Flute Academy, Muramatsu Flute Malaysia, Koje Reeds, The Band Store, UCSI University, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), Low Chee Meng (LCM Music), Wong Chee Yean and Lester Lim (Music Playground Singapore).

ABOUT The klpac Symphonic Band
Soon after The klpac Orchestra was formed, The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) established The klpac Symphonic Band in 2009 which made its debut with “Friendship in Concert”.

Like the other music ensembles under klpac, The klpac Symphonic Band is a community-oriented initiative aimed at providing a platform for brass, wind and percussion players to hone their skills and perform regularly. It was established to fill a gap in the local music scene where many band musicians who started playing during their schooling years were left with no avenue to grow and pursue their interest after leaving school. Its members are musicians and music lovers from different backgrounds and age groups who are admitted based on an audition.

The klpac Symphonic Band has been under the leadership of its Music Director and Resident Conductor Cheryl Mah since 2011. The band’s “Ultimate Music Crawl” concert bagged the “BEST OF 2019” Award at the 17th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2020.

Apart from its sold out “Back to the Classics” concert, the band initiated an all-important Outreach Collaborative Project in 2022 with fellow music educators and over 50 musicians, some from out-of-state, which culminated in a concert entitled “An Uncommon Journey”. On the audience development front, the band also debuted its “Music Play Date” which was an interactive, family-friendly concert held outdoors.
