“Digging, sowing, watering, mulching—then rest and wait patiently. If rest is a natural part of growth, why do we find it so hard to take a break?”

For one whole year, Orang Orang Drum Theatre took a hands-on approach by spending three days a week in the heights of Shan-Ka-La: creating work, learning the basics of construction and farming, adapting to the unfamiliar rhythms of orchard life. For the other four days, they’d be back in the familiar city, teaching and performing as usual. By shuttling between these lifestyles, these places, they began to compare and reflect on the relationship between people and the environments they inhabit.

Listen: the drum echoes in Shan-Ka-La.
Look: a snapshot of the city on stage.
Between these, we untangle the modern riddle: What does it mean to belong?

Kaka-Lala [Cantonese] ~ceruk-meruk; every little corner of the world
Place a “mountain” before it and it becomes Shan-Ka-La: somewhere that’s in the middle of nowhere.

This production is presented by Orang Orang Drum Theatre and supported by Ministry Of Tourism, Arts & Culture, The Actors Studio Foundation, The Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur and Filamen.

Throughout this ten-year journey, the act of drumming has somehow led them to consider the connection between surviving and living. So, in 2021, OODT embarked on the Shan-Ka-La project—the simple, unpretentious orchard life served to refresh the heavy palate of the city’s constant symphony, allowing the drummers to sample the “natural flavours” of life. In the meantime, they continued to reflect on what it means to “drum”, and explore further possibilities contained within “drumming and living”.

Using the drum’s raw power to create a vocabulary of theatre, and using theatre’s expansive multitudes (masks, props, song, dance, drama, etc.) to enrich meaning in the voices of the drum.

Besides the use of various instruments, the drummers’ physical movements are also an expression of “drum theatre”. How can the combined rhythms of their movements become a vehicle for meaning? This is also a central line of inquiry in this creative process.

Since its establishment in 2013, Orang Orang Drum Theatre’s core members Boyz Chew, Zyee Leow, and Damien Leow have been flitting between music, dance, and theatre, looking for a platform of expression for drum theatre. They led a team to participate in international music festivals such as Sziget Festival 2019, WOMADELAIDE 2020, Venice Theatre Arts Festival, Venice Open Stage, and the Danse en Ville Dance Festival in Belgium and Germany. In recent years, they have brought their troupe to tour many cultural and dance arts festivals in Europe, such as in France, Hungary, and Serbia. Through interactions with traditional cultures, they explore the space between tradition and modernity.

The word ‘orang’ means people, and the idea at the heart of OODT is to bring the arts to the people.
